How to Play Skyrim VR In Google Cardboard

Google Cardboard is an awesome way to give people a glimpse of what VR is all about. However, it’s as low-end as the technology gets. This mobile app might change this perspective.

RiftCat has recently launched VRidge, an Android app that allows users to play PC VR titles especially developed for the Oculus Rift or HTC Vive on your Google Cardboard.

In fact, you can play Skyrim VR using Google Cardboard with the help of this app. To do this, you’ll need to head to RiftCat’s website to download a client, download Skyrim VR game via Steam. You will also need an Xbox or a PS4 controller, to be able to play the game.

Upon installing Skyrim VR , you just need to launch VRidge and connect it to Steam VR! All you got to do next is simply insert your phone into Google Cardboard and play the content in mobile VR. Cool eh?

For detailed instructions, you might want to watch the video here. You would be able to see how it works in the video, though you’ll need to keep a few things in mind. Firstly, expect technical hiccups along the way. What you won’t be able to do is any kind of position-tracked movements for Room Scale experiences on the Vive, or moving your head in any direction. But yeah, you’d still be able to tilt and twist your head to look around environments, which for me is a good thing. It will be interesting to see if they would be able to come up with any solutions for this in the future.

What you get from here is an early glimpse at where VR could be headed in the next coming years; immersive experiences running on untethered HMDs with some position-tracked input. As for VRidge itself, the developer is planning to release an iOS version soon. Their current app is free to download, meaning you could try out some Rift and Vive experiences without having to spend a lot of money for the actual HMDs. Don’t expect too much and there’s really an emphasis on the word ‘try’, though.

Just so you guys know, I got this working eventually. Yeah the resolution is not that good, and the controls are not perfect. Also, some game mechanics like “World Map” is weird and broken. But it mostly works.
