What’s Next For The World Of VR Cardboard?

There are already more than 5 million units of Google Cardboard which have been sold domestically, and that’s not to mention the wide range of VR Cardboard which has been printed for businesses and events. These extremely simple and usable devices have been able to bring virtual reality to a much wider audience than a high-end alternative, like the Oculus Rift, could possibly do.

VR Cardboard Surprised Everyone – Even Google
When Google first announced the concept of VR Cardboard, everyone thought it was a joke. That opinion stayed with the device until people actually started to try it out. The simplicity of a smartphone, combined with a piece of cardboard and a couple of lenses has really enabled the world to experience virtual reality on a shoe-strong budget.

It’s fairly safe to say that, if the concept hadn’t been driven by Google, it wouldn’t have made it. The Google brand gave the idea legitimacy, whereas almost any other company would have been laughed at and ignored.

Although the original model was unveiled in 2014, the 2nd version came out in 2015. This marked some real improvements in the headset’s design, which scaled up lenses and a more comfortable frame which also allowed the use of larger mobile devices. In fact, the only real problem with V2.0 Cardboard is that can often be fairly think to ship when pre-assembled.

So, What’s Next For Virtual Reality Cardboard?
Branded VR cardboard remains an affordable solution for anyone and everyone to enjoy virtual reality apps from their smartphones. It is likely that Google’s next headset design (3.0) will take inspiration from the Oculus Rift and the HTC Vive and take the form of a self-contained piece of kit. The idea is that it will hold its own screen, processing software as well as position and motion tracking technology.

By implementing this more expensive tech on the model, it is likely the VR Cardboard 3.0 will be much more expensive version. However, it looks to take on the premium market by actually being self-contained. The Oculus Rift, for example, is a stationary experience due to the mess of wires keeping you in place.

Where Is Google Going With Virtual Reality Headsets?

Another option is that Google’s new devices will come pre-equipped with better support for VR tech. By integrating additional sensors into the mobile operating system, Android, Google’s VR team will be able to create a more immersive and reliable virtual reality experience. Google’s designs largely rely on tech already built into mobile devices, so improving this tech makes perfect sense.

Google Cardboard is little more than a brilliant template to build off of – as Google places more focus on the tech within their mobile devices, it is likely that independent businesses will be in charge of continuing to develop the Cardboard platform for continued comfort and usability.
